HackMedTech 2023 Testimonials
Les Cinq Hacketeers
Students from McGill University won first place at this year's HackMedTech event! "Les Cinq Hacketeers" designed "ArriveEr" and "ArriveER Scanner" to improve the throughput of hospital emergency departments. ArriveER lets patients view the nearest hospitals and average wait times. Once their hospital is selected, patients will complete a triage questionnaire and add their recent medical history to receive a QR code for check-in.
Healthcare professionals use ArriveER Scanner to save time during the triage process and quickly process recent patient medical history changes. The scanned QR code is also processed through ECTAS, an AI model that identifies the patient's CTAS level, improving the overall efficiency of the emergency department.
A member of the winning group, Ali Taqvi, shared that participating in HackMedTech 2023 was a positive experience. He and his team enjoyed challenging themselves, applying their knowledge to solve real-world problems, and meeting new people with different strengths and unique ideas.
Since everyone from "Les Cinq Hacketeers" was from McGill University, the team decided to meet in person for an initial challenge discussion. They determined that the origin of the problem lies in pre-triage and then were able to brainstorm problem-solving techniques. While some members of the group focused on research and others focused on the application design, the team collaborated effectively to create the winning solution.
Ali encourages future students to participate in HackMedTech since it was a valuable experience that allowed him to make new friends and connect with people with similar interests.
Caduceus
The group "Caduceus" won third place at HackMedTech 2023 for their Interactive EMR Interface App design that simplifies Emergency Department activities for physicians and nurses. Annika Benson, Danté Coulter, Robert Kuhne, Brayden Barnes, and Ally Klassen's real-time processing program is based on Dr.Allen Cameron's predictive algorithm that successfully predicts the likelihood of a patient's admission post-triage.
Brayden Barnes and Ally Klassen shared that HackMedTech 2023 was a great experience. Since this was their first Hack-a-thon experience, Brayden and Ally felt this was the perfect introduction to solving real-world problems. They enjoyed collaborating with like-minded people who shared similar biomedical engineering passions.
With different levels of expertise ranging from undergraduate to Ph.D., the group members enjoyed seeing how each individual brought something unique to the project. This experience was enjoyable and educational, and it was incredibly insightful for them to learn about all the different aspects of the Healthcare System from a Biomedical Engineering perspective.
Brayden and Ally shared that meeting with professional mentors during the event was extremely helpful in narrowing down their ideas. They mentioned how great it was to connect with professionals who could provide their expertise and were passionate about the project.
Ally and Brayden think that future students should participate in HackMedTech as it was enlightening to work with like-minded people who share similar passions.
